Neil Canning

Neil Canning is a leading contemporary painter and printmaker whose work is deeply rooted in the Cornish landscape. Based in Cornwall since 1997, he draws inspiration from the dramatic coastline near his home, using abstraction to express shifting light, weather and the elemental energy where land meets sea. His bold, gestural mark‑making and distinctive colour palette capture the power and atmosphere of the natural world.

During his years in St Ives, Neil became part of the town’s vibrant artistic community, forming close friendships with Sandra Blow and Trevor Bell. His inclusion in Art Now at Tate St Ives in 2007 marked him as a significant voice among the next generation of artists working in the region.

Neil’s achievements include an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Exeter in 2011 for his contribution to contemporary British art, as well as first prize in the ING Discerning Eye exhibition. His work has featured in major public and corporate projects for organisations such as John Lewis plc, British Land plc and Cardiff Central Library, and is held in collections worldwide.

Coastal Gallery is delighted to present a selection of Neil Canning’s work.
